Commercial Buildings

The main goal of Architectural Technology at iTECH is to prepare students for a career in the Architectural Profession. Students need to become familiar with the profession as a whole. Students will learn about Zoning, ADA requirements, the permitting process, red lines, Mechanical, Structural, and Civil Plans. It is important that students learn all aspects of planning process.

Residential Design & Planning

The main focus of Architectural Technology is to learn, understand, and develop the necessary skills relevant to the residential dwellings. A goal of the program is to give students the knowledge and understanding of how a typical set of home plans is developed and put together. Upon the completion of this program students should have the ability to put an entire set of architectural construction drawings done in CAD format.

Program Description

The Architectural Drafting program focuses on producing the conceptual, practical, and professional skills required to create presentation, construction, and design drawings associated with the professions of architecture and engineering.

This program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Architecture and Construction career cluster; provides technical skill proficiency, and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of the Architecture and Construction career cluster.

Preparation for Employment
This program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills to prepare students for employment in architectural drafting, mechanical drafting, and related industry professions. The content includes practical experiences in drafting, construction drawings, presentations, professionalism, and industry standards.

Portfolio
Architectural Draftingstudents prepare a portfolio that highlights the skills they learned in order to prepare them for a challenging career.Students will create a portfolio sampling and highlighting cumulative work done either inside or outside of class.

There are a variety of drafting projects within the six Occupational Completion Points. You will need to complete all of the projects in order to satisfy the curriculum requirements for this course. Portions of each project will be included in your portfolio.

Studio Activities & Equipment
Studio activities are an integral part of this program.  These activities include instruction in the use of safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials, and processes related to these occupations.  The equipment and supplies in the architectural drafting classroom studio are provided to enhance the hands-on experiences for students. Included in the studio is a lab of 24 Windows PC computers with Dual-Screens, LCD Projectors, 5 full sized drafting desk, a light table, 3 full sized color plotters, drafting tools and equipment.

Q: “Construction, Architecture, and Engineering have been hit hard with the current recession. Why would anyone pursue a career in the architectural profession?”
A: “Although times are tough in just about every profession, there is always going to be a need for highly specialized and trained individuals in the profession of architecture.  Keep in mind that the number of baby boomers retiring and leaving the work force will have a dramatic effect on the labor pool of qualified professionals in all categories in the very near future. This will create a greater demand. Another factor specific to Southwest Florida is the location. People continue to want to live, move, work, and retire here. The area provides convenient access to shopping, services, and numerous outdoor activities year round.”

Q: “Is Architecture is a profession already saturated with highly skilled professionals?”
A: “No. Many of the Architects of the construction and real estate bubble were part of the baby boomer generation and have chosen to retire and close their firms as the economy has slowed. Many working professionals have only the basic CAD drafting skills which creates a demand for fast and proficient CAD operators. Architecture is a constantly evolving field with a need of fresh talent, creative energy, and visionaries with a keen eye for seeing new ways of doing things.”

Q: “Does the entire course involve just CAD drafting on the computer and book work?”
A: “Absolutely not, I believe it is essential that students learn about architecture in all aspects from its history to understanding all of the elements and materials used in its creation. Students are required to do hand drawings and create a sketch book to accompany their resumes when they interview for jobs as part of the course requirement. They are also required to design their own dream house with a budget as well as work on a commercial building in a group setting just as they would in the professional setting.”

Q: “What are some of the skills I will be learning on CAD?”
A: “Our goal is to get you using every aspect of the program just as you would if the office setting. You have to become familiar with quickly maneuvering through the software, plotting drawings, manipulating layers, saving, typing in commands, utilizing the precision accuracy of the software, and mastering the language that is Auto CAD. ”
